What is UGIC? The Utah Geographic Information Council is a non-profit organization of GIS professionals. In addition to providing continuing education and networking opportunities to current GIS professionals, a primary goal of UGIC is to encourage and advance geographic information systems through all levels of education. UGIC is pleased to continue a scholarship program to assist in the education of future GIS professionals.
Why Should Students Attend the UGIC Conference? This scholarship is designed to give students an opportunity to gain professional experience prior to entering the workforce. Attendance at the UGIC conference will introduce you to the local GIS community, establish valuable contacts with current GIS professionals, provide technical skills through conference workshops, and introduce you to projects and applications currently underway in our community.
Awards will be granted to applicants meeting the eligibility requirements and selected by the UGIC board based on their evaluation of the applicant’s selection criteria submission. Awards will include registration and lodging expenses. Students receiving an award will be expected to spend a portion of the conference assisting UGIC Board members at the Registration Desk or other assigned conference duties.
Eligibility:
The scholarship is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Applicants must be current students (full or part-time) working towards a degree or certificate in an accredited college or university. The degree or program the applicant is working towards must have an emphasis on GIS. Disciplines may include Geography, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, Urban Planning, Transportation, Geology, Social Sciences, etc.
Selection Criteria:
- A 750 word (minimum) typed essay by the applicant describing their interest in GIS, how GIS has been applied in their current program of study, educational and career goals, and an indication of how the applicant intends to apply GIS skills in their profession/career. Particular emphasis should be given to what the applicant hopes to gain by attending the conference.
- Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate professional level writing skills.
- A brief letter or statement of reference from 1 professor familiar with your academic ability.
Submissions must be received by March 21st, 2025. Please e-mail all materials to the UGIC Board at [email protected]. College or University department will be contacted to verify student status.
Awards will be announced by April 4th.
